Steps:

Before buying a new toilet seat, measure your current one:
Measure the distance between the bolts where the seat attaches to the bowl. The typical distance is 5 1/2 inches.
Determine the width of the bowl at its widest point.
Measure the length of the bowl between the seat bolts and the bowl's front edge.
Choose a new toilet seat based on those measurements. The options range from high-impact plastic to materials like wood coated in plastic.
Note: Heated or other specialty seats may have different installation requirements, so make sure to follow the instructions.
Clean the old toilet seat, then remove it.
Start by locating the seat bolts at the back of the bowl.
Remove bolt covers if necessary. Loosen the nuts from the bolts using your hands or an adjustable wrench.
Lift the old seat and its hinges.
Position the new seat on the toilet bowl rim.
Make sure it lines up with the holes for the bolts.
Attach the nuts to the bolts and tighten.
